The Ballard Locks are the both the busiest locks and oldest locks in the U.S, and their impact on Seattle's history has landed them on the National Register of Historic Places. Over 40,000 vessels a year use the locks to transit from the open ocean saltwater of Puget Sound with the freshwater of Lake Union and Lake Washington.
